Phaser Range (Deck 14)

The phaser range is a long, deep compartment considerably longer than it is wide, its far end dominated by a shallow curved backstop wall finished in a dull, faintly scarred matte black material designed to absorb stray phaser discharge. A shimmering, barely visible forcefield curtain hangs just in front of the backstop, humming softly at a low, steady pitch, providing an additional margin of safety behind the target line. Suspended from an overhead track, a row of humanoid-silhouette practice targets made of a pale grey self-healing polymer hang at intervals, their surfaces pocked with faint discoloration from repeated impacts that fade and smooth over within moments of each hit. The near end of the range holds a shallow firing line marked by a raised strip of yellow tread on the deck, behind which a simple equipment rack holds a scattering of training phasers set to low-yield stun calibration. A control booth is recessed into the sidewall just behind the firing line, its interior visible through a narrow reinforced window, holding a compact console used to configure target patterns, movement sequences, and the range's holo-emitter grid, a subtle lattice of small projector nodes set into the ceiling and side walls capable of overlaying simple environmental scenarios atop the physical targets. The lighting in the range is bright and even along the firing line, dimming slightly toward the target end to keep attention focused forward, and the deck is a hard-wearing, slightly textured composite tile that shows faint wear patterns from repeated foot traffic. The air carries a persistent ozone smell, stronger here than almost anywhere else aboard aside from the weapons maintenance workshop, and the space periodically fills with the sharp, distinctive crack of phaser discharge followed by the softer hum of a target's polymer surface healing itself before the next shot.
