Chief Engineer's Office (Deck 17)

Set just off the main engineering floor behind a door that dampens most of the core's ambient hum to a faint background presence, the Chief Engineer's office is a modest, functional space that trades the main floor's dramatic lighting for a warmer, more personal atmosphere. A solid desk of dark composite dominates the room's near half, its surface kept mostly clear but for a companel angled toward the door and a scattering of isolinear chips in a small tray, evidence of ongoing diagnostic work carried from the floor outside. Behind the desk, a high-backed chair faces a wall-mounted display currently split between a ship-wide systems overview and a smaller window tracking an active engineering project. One wall holds a modest personal shelf, home to a few real and replicated mementos, a small model of a past vessel, a chunk of raw latinum-adjacent mineral used as a paperweight, and a scattering of data chips in a neat rack, the collection distinctly more idiosyncratic than the regulation-standard décor found in most shipboard offices. The opposite wall is given over to a small worktable fitted with a component fabrication unit and a set of precision tools racked in a foam-lined case, allowing hands-on tinkering with parts too delicate or specialized for the main floor's larger equipment. A single viewport, narrow and set high on the outer wall, offers a sliver of starfield view, the only such window in the compartment, its light supplementing the room's otherwise warm, low-intensity lighting scheme. The floor is a plain dark carpet tile rather than the bare composite of the main floor, softening footsteps and giving the office a noticeably quieter, more settled feel. The air carries only a faint trace of the ionized scent that permeates engineering proper, the door's seal effective enough to make the office feel like a genuine retreat, and the low, steady hum of the core is reduced here to a barely perceptible vibration felt more than heard, present but no longer intrusive.
