Atmospheric Processing Hub (Deck 8)

The hub is a tall, machinery-dense compartment built around three matched columns of atmospheric processing units running from deck to overhead, each column a cluster of pale grey cylindrical tanks and scrubber housings connected by a webwork of exposed ducting. Faint condensation beads on some of the cooler ducting near the base of each column, catching the light in small, regularly-spaced drips into recessed floor grating. A central monitoring station sits between the columns, a waist-high console ringed by a low railing, its display split into panels tracking oxygen output, carbon dioxide scrubbing efficiency, trace gas levels, and pressure across each of the ship's damage control zones. Status indicators along the top of each column glow a steady green, shifting to amber during a scrubber's active regeneration cycle. Overhead, thick primary ducting fans out toward the ship's main circulation trunks, wrapped in a dull insulating sleeve and secured with wide metal banding at regular intervals. The floor throughout is perforated metal grating rather than solid composite, allowing airflow to be drawn from below as part of the room's own ventilation design, and the walls are left largely as exposed structural framework rather than finished paneling. The room is never quiet - a deep, steady mechanical breathing sound from the scrubber cycles underlies everything else, occasionally punctuated by a heavier venting hiss when a unit purges accumulated waste gas. The air itself is crisp and faintly metallic, noticeably fresher than the corridor outside, a side effect of standing this close to the source of the ship's breathable atmosphere.
