Aeroshuttle Docking Bay (Deck 9)
Created by Captain Natira Dareese on Tue Sep 22nd, 2026 @ 9:27pm
The bay is built around a deep, recessed cradle sunk into the ventral hull, shaped to match the aeroshuttle's hull contours almost exactly, with the little craft normally sitting nested into it nose-forward, wingtips just clearing the cradle's raised edge rails. A gantry structure arcs overhead the cradle, hung with fueling umbilicals, a power coupling arm, and a maintenance walkway that can swing down flush against the aeroshuttle's upper hull once docked.
Around the cradle's perimeter, the deck is a wide horseshoe of grated metal walkway, wide enough for a small ground crew to work fueling and pre-flight checks simultaneously. Deuterium and antimatter micro-pod umbilicals hang coiled on retractable reels bolted to the gantry, each capped with a color-coded connector matched to a corresponding port on the aeroshuttle's hull.
The ventral hatch itself dominates the aft end of the bay - a massive circular deck section that can split and retract for launch and recovery, ringed with amber warning strobes that activate automatically whenever the hatch mechanism is armed. Heavy blast shielding lines the walls near the hatch, and a secondary personnel airlock is set into the forward bulkhead for crew access when the main bay is depressurized during launch operations.
When the aeroshuttle is away, the cradle sits empty and the bay feels unusually large and hollow, footsteps echoing off the bare structural walls. Docked and powered down, the aeroshuttle ticks and creaks faintly as it cools, and the bay carries a faint smell of impulse exhaust residue and hydraulic fluid from the tractor beam docking clamps that hold the little ship secure.
