Ventral Sensor Pallets (Deck 9)

This compartment is a low, wide crawlspace-like room hugging the curve of the ventral hull, tall enough to stand in only near the center where the deck steps up slightly to accommodate the sensor pallet housing itself. The pallet mechanism dominates the room - a broad, disc-shaped array assembly recessed into the hull, ringed by a service collar that allows it to rotate and tilt for aiming, currently visible through a retracted access cowling. Around the pallet's service collar, a ring of small maintenance ports gives access to individual sensor elements, each labeled with a function tag - gravimetric, subspace, or standard EM spectrum sensing - and each fitted with its own diagnostic contact point. A single technician's console is mounted on a swing arm near the entrance, foldable flat against the bulkhead when not in use to save space in the cramped compartment. Cable runs are visibly bundled and secured along the low ceiling rather than hidden, colored sheathing distinguishing power feeds from data lines, all converging on a junction box above the pallet's rotation mechanism. The walls are unfinished structural framework, and the floor near the pallet housing is a textured grip surface rather than standard composite, a concession to the awkward angles technicians sometimes have to work from during pallet servicing. When the pallet is actively scanning, a faint mechanical whir and an occasional soft clunk mark its slow rotation and tilt adjustments, audible even through the access cowling. The compartment is otherwise quiet and slightly cooler than interior spaces, close enough to the hull to pick up some of the chill of open space beyond it.
